Bertrand Milworth, a researcher in Senegal, rents a room from a young couple and is immediately attracted to the wife, Kene. But Bertrand has a white wife at home--Rose, about whom his feelings are ambivalent. In the midst of his anxieties about love and sex, he begins to think that he may be in danger in the small village in which he is staying.
