Joshua Redmont, a struggling New York husband, father, and temp worker, has been receiving monthly thousand-dollar checks from the United States Agent, a firm he does not know. Over the years, the checks have followed him from address to address, and he has cashed them. However, on his way to meet his family for a vacation on Fire Island, Josh is approached by a stranger, and gradually learns that he himself has been a secret agent-in-waiting, and that the people he thought of as his benefactors now want him to play a part in a political assassination.
